Adam Lambert Owns Ring of Fire on American Idol

by Elizabeth Fairview  |  March 18th, 2009
Adam Lambert's Middle Eastern spin on Ring of Fire last night has everyone talking. (YouTube Video)

Adam Lambert borrowed an arrangement of Ring of Fire that he said, would have a Middle Eastern twist to it. Us viewers at home couldn't grasp what he was talking about – but once he began singing, man, it all came together.

Now we all knew the emo dude was going to have an issue with country week. But he pulled this one off – totally owning a totally crazy version of the classic Johnny Cash tune.

The rendition of the song was weird and different and totally cool. The audience loved it, the judges swooned – but Simon Cowell called it "self-indulgent rubbish."

What did you think? Were you blown away or underwhelmed?

Okay, just adding my 2 cents' worth but I thought this performance by Adam was absolutely AMAZING!!! He just rocked this song. I love that song to begin with but come on, does this guy have talent or what? And he has everything else to make this song work. He's sexy, knows how to work a stage and can sing like crazy. People need to be more open minded and enjoy this kind of world music to see that what he did with it was beyond talent. It took imagine galore – where did he ever come up with this? Doesn't matter – he rocked it. I honestly can't wait to see what he does next week and I hope that Simon's narrow-minded, negative comments don't take away this guy's extreme talent and freedom to be who he is. Simon needs to open himself up a bit – he's too narrow minded. Okay, that's all I have to say!!!

I found this performance so hypnotic. I liked it on the night but just watching it back again . . . . WHOA, I was blown away all over again. Like many people watching Idol, the highlight each week for me is seeing what Adam does – his song choice, his take on the song and above all, his performance. I noticed no one has likened Adam to Elvis yet but let me tell you, as a lifelong Elvis fan, I can see some major similarities. Just watch a couple of early Elvis performances and you'll see the camera loves them BOTH!! I'm in Australia so I can't vote but I sure wish I could because so far my votes would have gone to Adam. Cheers Sally

Beside the fact that that was the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen, In the context of American Idol Adam Lambert gave the most epic performance that has ever been done. It was erotic and exotic and provocative. I love how he commands our attention, “look at me, I am so going there” You either love him or hate him, there is no middle ground. I was mesmerized by that performance, it was Cirque Du Soleil meets Muse meets some obscure opera. I love every second of what he did. This will be talked about for a very long time. Vocally, everyone else eats his dust, He can sing rings around all the others. Let’s be real people, who were you talking about today? I can guarantee that if you watched Idol last night, then you were talking about Adam. Love it or hate it, it was on your mind. In 5 years time, the only person anyone will remember is Adam Lambert. He may have borrowed from Dilana’s version on Rock Star, Supernova. But he did it his way and he did it on American Idol. Adam brings the artistry that is lacking from this white bread TV show. I fear the judges have no box to put him in and hence don’t know what to do with him. Just let him be Adam, for those of us who love him and there are many, it just might keep this stale show on the air.

The guy is a star and I personally am amazed that he 'needs' a show like American Idol and someone like Simon Cowell anyhow.. The performance last night, (and that is exactly what it was.. You don't see many performances on American Idol) sent shivers down my spine.. not too many do that!! . He should already be well established fronting a band like INXS or similar.. What a range and what a voice!.. falsetto or natural!! great stuff!! …This guy really can sing!

I LOVED this performance by Adam. I felt a little weird listening to it the first time, and slightly uncomfortable with the obvious sex-eyes. But I have to admit it was completely hypnotic. Then I listened to the performance without watching it, and you really start to appreciate his amazing vocals. The whole thing is like a vortex that pulls you in. He was quite brave to come out and perform the whole thing. I disagree with Simon completely; it was not rubbish. I am very grateful that the other three judges, especially Randy, liked it. Perhaps not entirely suitable for AI; I doubt most viewers are ready for this, but if Adam put out a record like this, I would most definitely buy it. He was sexy and seductive, and mind-blowingly good.

I thought Adam was incredible! It was a total WOW moment and his vocals were amazing but not one judge mentioned that fact!? He' is the only reason I'm watching AI and after his performance, I could not watch the rest of them—boring. This guy just has "it."
I am a little concerned that AI will try to change him—Adam, please stay true to yourself—you are blazing your own path!!
