Tonight was the big night on American Idol and Fox producers knew it — comparing the David-on-David face-off to a boxing match and having the judges spew excitement over mediocre performances. Tonight's American Idol kicked off with Michael Buffer saying, "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" as David Cook and David Archuleta came on stage dressed in silk robes. Yeah, pre-tay lame.

Columbia Records President, Clive Davis, chose the first songs. For David Cook, he's picked U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and for David Archuleta, "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me."

The Davids then sing songs written by the American Idol song writing competition finalists. Archuleta's song may or may not have been called "My Panties Are Too Tight."

The final round was contestant's choice. Cook sang a Collective Soul song, "The World I Know" (go '90's… hoo raah).

Cook's performance was good. Not overdone. Nice. The judges approved - save for Simon Cowell, who said Cook chose the wrong song for the finale. Archuleta argued that he wanted to sing something new because it was a progression, not rehash the old stuff… like…

Archuleta sang "Imagine" - a song he already sang. The judges exploded with praise. Simon said this show is about finding a star and that tonight, they have witnessed one of the best finals, and that David Archuleta came out to win, "and what we have witnessed is a knockout."

Yeah, that wasn't scripted.

So who do you think won the night? Will you vote? Make tomorrow's finale more exciting by betting on American Idol in the Bodog Sportsbook.

I really fot thrown for a loop tonight! For the past few weeks David Cook washed the floor with that kid then tonight for some starnge reason he just deflated?? What happened? Was it just a case of little David wanting it more? I absolutely HATE to admitt it but "A" gets and A tonite and "C" gets a C. The kid really did step it up and for some reason Cook just seemed to not be "with it"? Everyone of his songs just laid there. I'm bummed.
