Box Office Results: Fool's Gold Collects $22 Million in Its Opening Week

This is the time of year when bad movies get to grab some ticket sales before the Oscars draw attention to the top movies from the previous year and the blockbuster season begins.
No surprise then that the mediocre chick flick Fool’s Gold - which will never again be in the same paragraph as the Oscars – collected top honors at the box office this weekend, earning $22 million in North American sales. Starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, Fool’s Gold is about a divorced couple searching for a sunken treasure.
Think Romancing the Stone without the Billy Ocean soundtrack, Kathleen Turner or a competent script. The film has been so badly reviewed it's rated as a D+ on Yahoo! Movies.
Fool’s Gold beat out an even worse movie,Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins starring Martin Lawrence. It opened with $17.1 million in box-office receipts. With Presidents’ Day weekend coming up in the U.S., next week’s top movies figure to create more buzz.
The anticipated premiere of Jumper opens this week and will likely compete for top spot.
