In a ruling today, a French court has ordered the Church of Scientology has been charged with fraud and ordered to pay $900,000 in damages. Apparently, French Scientology leaders pressured members of the congregation to pay large sums for "questionable financial gain" and used "commercial harassment" against recruits after a woman claimed she was pressured into giving the church huge amounts money after being offered a free personality test.
Prosecutors had asked for the group’s French operations to be dissolved.
This ruling comes on the heels of yesterday's news, when it was reported that Oscar-winning Crash director Paul Haggis was leaving the Church of Scientology after being a member for 35 years. Haggis wrote a letter to Tommy Davis, the spokesman for the church, telling Davis he was disappointed that the church supported the anti gay marriage ban, Proposition 8. He wrote that he also was stunned when he saw an interview where a church official denied the use of "disconnection" in Scientology – which is when the church pressures a member to disconnect from family or friends who they feel are against the church. Haggis says his wife had been asked to disconnect from her parents.
