The race for the Democratic presidential nomination is finally over. The AP is reporting that the Illinois Senator Barack Obama is officially the Democratic nominee, edging out his competitor, New York Senator Hillary Clinton.
"The AP tally was based on public commitments from delegates as well as more than a dozen private commitments. It also included a minimum number of delegates Obama was guaranteed even if he lost the final two primaries in South Dakota and Montana later in the day."
However there are conflicting reports as to whether Clinton will finally give up her fight. The "New York Times" reports, "Clinton’s aides said that, should Obama cross the line Tuesday night — and be declared at least the presumptive nominee — their candidate would acknowledge his accomplishment, without going so far as to drop out."
However the "Boston Globe" paints a more decisive picture of that state of the Clinton bid reporting that she will "gracefully exit the stage and won't take her fight to the convention."
Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe commented this morning that once Obama reaches the majority of delegates, "I think Hillary Clinton will congratulate him and call him the nominee."
