David Letterman revealed to his audience last night that he was the center of an extortion plot for $2 million. He described how he found an envelope in the back seat of his car that contained a letter demanding the money as well as proof of Letterman's sexual escapades with female employees of his show – which Letterman confessed were true.
The note in the package read: "I know that you do some terrible, terrible things – and I can prove you do these terrible things."
He did not confess as to whether or not the relationships were carried on while he was married to Regina Lasko, his current wife who is the mother of his son.
Letterman said that he gave the perpetrator a fake check and that he's been taken into custody.
Letterman said, “This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life. I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury. I had to tell them all of the creepy things that I had done. The creepy stuff was that I have had sex with women who work for me on this show. My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would."
The thing that was odd was that Letterman, who spews 90% sarcasm, is that he didn't begin the monologue by warning the audience that he was about to say something serious – so it was like everyone was waiting for the punchline – or wondering whether or not he was joking.
