W. Mark Felt, the former number-two official at the FBI, who became known as "Deep Throat," the secretive source who provided information that helped unravel the Watergate scandal in the early 1970s and contributed to the resignation of president Richard M. Nixon, died at the age of 95 at his home in California from congestive heart failure.
Felt's identity as Deep Throat's identity was not revealed until May of 2005. Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who broke the Watergate scandal, had kept Felt's secret for over three decades.
Felt's daughter, Joan Felt, told the Washington Post this morning that her father ate a big breakfast before remarking that he was tired and going to sleep.
"He slipped away," she said.
