Yesterday was a big day for California — the Supreme Court brought down the state law that banned gay marriage. Hours later, Ellen DeGeneres announced on her talk show that she would marry her long-time love, Portia de Rossi. Her news was met with a standing ovation from the audience an de Rossi watched on the sidelines.

"I'm thrilled that the California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage," DeGeneres later told The Advocate. "I can't wait to get married. We all deserve the same rights, and I believe that someday…not allowing gays to marry will seem as absurd as not allowing women to vote."

Before the ruling yesterday, only one US state - Massachusetts - allowed gay marriage.
