Crooner Harry Connick Jr. appeared as a guest judge on an Australian TV show, Hey Hey It's Saturday, and was offended by a dance troupe called Jackson Jive who performed in blackface.

The skit was performed twenty years earlier on the show and the group was performing their act again as part of the reunion line-up. However, perhaps they missed the memo that things have changed over the last twenty years! Harry gave them a score of 0 out of 10 and said that they'd be in trouble if they tried to bring their act to the States.

Later in the show, host Daryl Somers commented, “I think we may have offended you with that act, and I deeply apologize on behalf of all of us – because I know that to your countrymen, that’s an insult to have a blackface routine like that on the show, so I do apologize.”

Harry Connick Jr. said, “Thanks Daryl, and I just wanted to say on behalf of my country, I know it was done humorously, but we’ve spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons, that when we see something like that, we take it really to heart. I know it was in good fun, and the last thing I want to do is take this show to a down level – because you know how much I love this show and this country – but I feel like I’m at home here, and if I knew that was going to be part of the show, I probably – I definitely wouldn’t have done it.”

Harry had appeared on the show before and was presented with an "honorary cast member" award in recognition of his contribution to the program over the years. The Bodog Sportsbook has entertainment betting. Need an account? Join Bodog now. It's free!
