John McCain is trying to clean up the PR mess he made when he lied to David Letterman in order to ditch his show for Katie Couric's. When Letterman got wind that he'd been dumped for Couric, he wouldn't let McCain off the hook, saying he felt like an "ugly date" because of the fiasco. Letterman made McCain quips the focus of that show and following shows, even using McCain as the subject for his infamous "Top 10″ list.

However, last night McCain bravely appeared on The Late Show and sheepishly told Letterman, "I screwed up."

Letterman immediately asked McCain: "Can you stay?"

"Yes, sir," Mr. McCain said, adding, "Depends on how bad it gets."

Though when Letterman pressed him for details on why he lied about having to rush to the airport, McCain just repeated, "I screwed up."

Thursday's interview was just for laughs though, as Letterman asked McCain point-blank whether VP Sarah Palin's is prepared to lead the country through "the next 9/11 attack."

"Absolutely," she is, McCain said. "She has inspired Americans. That's the thing we need."
