Paul Haggis has a bone to pick with Xenu. The Oscar-winning director of Crash has turned in his 35-year-membership to the Church of Scientology.
Vulture is reporting that when a San Diego division of the church publicly supported Prop 8, Haggis asked Scientology’s national spokesman Tommy Davis to denounce its actions but Davis didn't. Haggis then read an interview in which Davis denied that Scientology enforces the practice of "disconnection" which is when members are instructed to cut off communication with loved ones who oppose Scientology. However, Haggis knew Davis was lying, as Haggis' own wife had been forced to cut ties with her parents. Haggis was further infuriated when he read about the smear tactics Scientology used against its former members.
Haggis wrote a letter to Davis. Here's an excerpt: "And so, after writing this letter, I am fully aware that some of my friends may choose to no longer associate with me, or in some cases work with me. I will always take their calls, as I always took yours. However, I have finally come to the conclusion that I can no longer be a part of this group. Frankly, I had to look no further than your refusal to denounce the church’s anti-gay stance, and the indefensible actions, and inactions, of those who condone this behavior within the organization. I am only ashamed that I waited this many months to act. I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Scientology."
Scientology was founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, who once wrote: "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion."
