Radiohead is releasing their seventh album "In Rainbows" online, and although they are charging £40 for the boxed set, they are leaving the download price up to the consumer, from zero on up (plus a transaction fee).

According to Rolling Stone, this is the breakdown of a $15.99 CD:

$0.17 Musicians' unions
$0.80 Packaging/manufacturing
$0.82 Publishing royalties
$0.80 Retail profit
$0.90 Distribution
$1.60 Artists' royalties
$1.70 Label profit
$2.40 Marketing/promotion
$2.91 Label overhead
$3.89 Retail overhead

So if you were to pay $5.00 for the download, Radiohead would be getting more from the sale of a CD. Although you don't get all the pretty packaging and extras, you were probably going to just put it on your IPod anyway, right? The download will be active Oct. 10.
