Although she didn't win the Vice Presidential seat, Sarah Palin is the Queen of 2008 – well, when it comes to Goolge searches, that is. According to the 2008 Year-End Google Zeitgeist, Palin was the most Googled search, beating the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the President-elect himself, Barack Obama. Here's a quick run-down of the top 10 searches of 2008 with brief explanations of what all the fuss was about.
- Sarah Palin: After blundering through now infamous Katie Couric interviews, this Alaskan Governor and VP candidate got America's attention in a big way.
- Beijing 2008: Olympic mania was in full-force over the summer.
- Facebook login: Four of the top ten searches were for social networking sites — in the U.S., Spain, Poland and Germany, which explains searches for Tuenti, Nasza Klasa and Wer Kennt Wen.
- Tuenti: Spain's social networking site
- Heath Ledger: The actor abruptly lost his life due to an accidental overdose shortly after his epic portrayal of the Joker in the latest Batman installment.
- Obama: The President-elect is a phenomenon.
- Nasza Klasa: Poland's social networking site.
- Wer Kennt Wen: Germany's social networking site.
- Euro 2008: UEFA European Football Championship was the soccer tournament to end all soccer tournaments, which was won by Spain.
- Jonas Brothers: These three dudes made the teen girls of 2008 squeal. They're like the Beatles but with more pimples and less talent.
