Shrek the Third took in $122 million this weekend to become the best debut ever for an animated film.
The latest adventure of the big green ogre shot past 2004's Shrek 2, which had held the previous record for animated openings with $108 million.
The movie reunites Mike Myers, who provides the voice of the lovably gruff ogre, and co-stars Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas. Justin Timberlake also joins the cast and provides the voice of the future King Arthur, an awkward teen Shrek grooms to rule the land.
After ruling the box office for two weekends, Spider-Man 3 slipped to second place with $28.5 million, raising its domestic take to $281.9 million. Worldwide, the film has taken in an impressive $747 million.
Shrek the Third will likely have a short reign as the number one movie because on Friday, Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.
Other weekend favorites at the box office were 28 Weeks Later holding the number three spot with $5.15 million, thriller Disturbia in fourth with $3.7 million, and chick flick Georgia Rule landing in fifth with $3.5 million.
Fracture was in sixth spot with $2.4 million, Delta Farce took seventh with $1.8 million, The Invisible was eighth with $1.3 million, spoof Hot Fuzz was ninth with $1.26 million and Waitress was tenth with $1.14 million.
