The Golden Compass Tops Weekend Box Office

The Golden Compass, the children's film criticized as anti-religious, topped the weekend box offices with $26.1 million.

The fantasy film which stars Nicole Kidman and is based on the award-winning novel by British author Philip Pullman, dethroned last week's top film Enchanted, which fell to second spot with $10.7 million.

In third place was holiday film This Christmas, a comedy about an African-American family's first get-together in years, which earned $5 million.

Another Christmas movie, Fred Claus, starring funnyman Vince Vaughn, was fourth with $4.66 million.

Beowulf, based on the thousand-year-old English legend, slipped to fifth this weekend, grossing $4.4 million.

The latest offering from film-making brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men, came in sixth place with $4.2 million.

Rounding out the top ten were August Rush in seventh with $3.5 million, video inspired Hitman in eighth with $3.4 million, Awake in ninth with $3.3 million and Bee Movie finished tenth with $2.6 million.
