Big Brown made racing history, but not in the way his team wanted — by becoming the first Triple Crown contender to finish last. After sweeping the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, Big Brown was the favorite to join the ranks of horseracing's most legendary, such as Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Affirmed, the last Triple Crown winner in 1978.

At the Belmont Stakes today, 38-1 long shot Da'Tara crossed the finish line first.

Two weeks ago, Big Brown's momentum slowed when he developed a hoof condition known as a quarter crack, which is a split in the left front hoof wall. However hoof specialists patched it up and trainer Rick Dutrow remained confident. Immediately after the race, Big Brown was evaluated by doctors, but was found to have no serious injuries. Rick Dutrow refused to speak to reporters.

Before the race, trainer Rick Dutrow Jr.'s confidence was bold and unwaivering.

"[The other horses], they just don't match up with Big Brown. I don't see that we have anything to worry about as far as the race goes."

Sired by Grade III winner, Boundary, a son of North American Champion sire Danzig, who was a son of Northern Dancer, Big Brown's dam was Mien, also a granddaughter of Northern Dancer through her sire, Nureyev. Since Affirmed became the last Triple Crown winner in 1978, 10 horses have won the first two legs but failed at the Belmont. Today, Big Brown became the 11th.
