There’s no doubt that California horse racing rules over New York. California has twice as many tracks as New York. New York may have the final jewel of the Triple Crown, and some other big races, but California tracks are open for business for most of the year. New York only has Aqueduct, Belmont Park, Saratoga, and Finger Lakes, and Aqueduct was being considered for closure last year. Despite local politicians’ efforts to save it, the track’s future is still undetermined.
California horse racing fans can go to many more stakes races than New Yorkers can, and the weather is a lot nicer. The racing industry in California is expanding with Santa Anita as its poster track. The track has added a synthetic surface, and the grounds occupy approximately 320 acres. Its landmark, 1,100-foot-long Grandstand seats 26,000 guests, and the giant infield area accommodates many thousands more.
