With a Saturday afternoon victory at the Grade I, $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup, Curlin surpassed Cigar's 12-year-old winnings record set back in 1996.

The 10 furlong victory, earned the four-year-old colt $400,000, just enough to overthrow his predecessor, the Maryland-bred and Bill Mott-trained Cigar.

Over ten years ago, Cigar retired as the previous North American earnings leader with $9,999,815.

Curlin, has now came out on top in his last six starts and amassed $10,246,800 in wins, much to the delight of owner Jess Jackson.

"Cigar left an indelible memory and was always a great competitor,” said Jackson in the NTRA conference call last Tuesday. “Curlin has proven himself as a champion and established himself as one of the best racehorses in the last century."

The September 2008 win at the Jockey Club Gold Cup was not Curlin's first at the venue having dethroned then-favorite Lawyer Ron at the race in 2007.
