Horse racing fans from around the world are today mourning the passing of Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel. According to reports, Frankel died this morning at his home in Pacific Palisades from complications of lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes). He was 68.

Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Joe Torre was one of Frankel's closest friends (the two watched the 2009 Breeders' Cup from Frankel's box at Santa Anita). Torre told reporters that Frankel used to go New York Yankees games when Torre was their manager, and then more recently he'd visit Torre at Dodger Stadium. Torre visited Frankel at his home last week.

"I was very touched with our last conversation," Torre said. "He's been a dear friend. He's going to be missed. He was a very private person, but there's an enormous importance what his relationship meant to me."

Among his numerous awards and achievements are five Eclipse Awards for outstanding trainer, 30 training titles, and throughout his 40-year career in the industry Frankel's horses have amassed a total of $227,947,775 in purses.

Horse racing trainers from coast to coast have been quick to voice their sadness upon hearing today's news.

"He could communicate with a horse better than he could with humans," trainer Barry Abrams said. "He felt what a horse felt. He could tell when a horse could run his best race. He was an amazing human being when it came to animals."

No matter how you look at it, the great debate between which horse will or should win the Eclipse Award – American Horse of the Year is particularly interesting because it involves two females. The last female horse to win the American Horse of the Year Award was Azeri in 2002.

Rachel Alexandra went 8 for 8 this year, posted three wins over the boys — including her impressive win in the Preakness Stakes. For that victory she became the first filly in 85 years to one-up the dudes.

"The one thing everybody keeps forgetting, she beat the fillies with authority," Mine That Bird trainer Chip Woolley Jr. said of Rachel Alexandra. "She didn't win by a neck or a length or two lengths. She beat 'em by 20 and in a big gallop. When you look at that and you put everything together, I think she's a very deserving champion."

Zenyatta, on the other hand, went 5 for 5 this year and last weekend's Breeders' Cup Classic win was her first against the boys. And it will likely be her last as trainer John Shirreffs says she will be sent to Kentucky for breeding. (Rachel Alexandra will be back next season, however.)

Still, some are quick to judge Rachel Alexandra for skipping out on the Breeders' Cup, which is considered a championship event.

"Each sport has their championship game," said Summer Bird's trainer Tim Ice. "If you don't compete in the championship game, then you shouldn't be a champion. This is the highlight of the year as far as all the great horses coming together. This should name Horse of the Year."

Looking back at Curlin — he took the American Horse of the Year awards two years in a row, winning it in 2007 and 2008. He did not, however, win the Breeders's Cup Classic both years. Curlin won the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2007 and it was Raven's Pass who claimed that victory in 2008.

The American Horse of the Year — along with all other Eclipse Awards — will be announced in January at the Beverly Hills ceremony.

In front of close to 59,000 fans on hand at Santa Anita to watch the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, Zenyatta (ridden by jockey Mike Smith) ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:00.62 and paid $7.60, $5.60 and $3.80 as the 5-2 odds on favorite to win. Gio Ponti returned $9.20 and $6.60, while Twice Over paid $7 to show.

Summer Bird came in fourth while Mine That Bird finished a disappointing 9th. Quality Road was scratched from the race following an incident at the starting gate.

Breeders' Cup Betting Tip No. 1: Consider the Longshots

The world's best thoroughbreds have already gathered at Santa Anita Park in Southern California, completing their final workouts in preparation for the 2009 Breeders' Cup World Championships scheduled for November 6th and 7th.

On Monday Morning Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird worked five-furlongs at a time of 58 1/5-seconds — the fastest of 58 recorded works at that distance — and is set to compete in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, which will be at 1 1/4-miles, the same distance as the Kentucky Derby which Mine That Bird won as a 50-1 longshot.

"The only part of his workout that is really important is the final quarter-mile," said trainer Chip Woolley. "He finished big today and galloped out big past the wire."

Look for a horse that has come from just off the pace in their most recent race and then drawn away through the stretch to win by more than four lengths.

Let's hope those track conditions keep all jockeys and horses safe. No one wants to see another Gozzip Girl-like trip, including jockey Kent Desormeaux. The Hall of Fame jockey was nearly thrown from Gozzip Girl's saddle in the Garden City Stakes (G1) when she was tripped up near the rail and stumbled.

For Gitano, the victory is his biggest to date. The English-bred horse has won 4 of 7 starts and his career earnings were a mere $54,669. Now with Saturday's big take his career earnings total a whopping $219,669.

PLUS, because the Goodwood Stakes is part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge series Gitano is now headed to race in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

"Our goal is the Classic," said Aron Wellman, racing manager for co-owner Team Valor International.

Mine That Bird finished a disappointing sixth in the Goodwood Stakes, but is still expected to race in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Trainer Chip Woolley believes the shorter distance worked against Mine That Bird and that an extra eighth of a mile would have changed the outcome of the race. Considering the BC Classic is run over 1 1/4 miles, Mine That Bird will still have another opportunity to prove that theory's correct. In the meantime, the Kentucky Derby winner and his jockey, Calvin Borel, will get three more works on Santa Anita's Pro-Ride synthetic track.

"He had a perfect trip, but he got to struggling a bit," Borel said. "I do know one thing: He's a lot better horse on the dirt. When you ask him here, he goes to struggling instead of just running. I don't know. We'll have to work on that a little bit and see what happens. But I think he'll be all right."

Nonetheless, on this day at Santa Anita it was all about the British horse that upset the American favorite. Gitano Hernando's win has no doubt made quite a few horse racing fans and bettors happy.
