Remnants of Hurricane Dolly forced New Mexico track Ruidoso Downs to cancel racing today, July 27th. A big disappointment for the undefeated Peppers Pride, who was ready to take a shot at breaking the North American Thoroughbred record for consecutive victories. The challenge will have to wait until next weekend.
"Ruidoso Downs has been impacted by Hurricane Dolly," said Ann McGovern, Ruidoso Downs' president and general manager. "We're assessing the situation and plan to race next weekend."
Ruidoso Downs, which is located near the northwest Texas border, reported the storm has left more than six inches of rain.
The $55,000 Lincoln Handicap which was scheduled today, was where Peppers Pride was ready to turn her undefeated 16 career starts, which she holds jointly with Citaiton, Mister Frisky, Cigar and Hallowed Dreams, into 17, which would surpass the others.
"All the horses that entered for Sunday's Zia Festival races (July 27) are now entered for the Zia Festival card on Saturday," said director of racing Robbie Junk.
