After an outstanding victory when Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown crossed the finish line 4 3/4 lengths ahead of the other contenders, early indications are that none of the horses that finished behind Big Brown will move on to the May 17 Preakness Stakes (gr.1).
David Carroll, whose Denis of Cork ran third behind the sadly ill-fated Eight Belles, said the colt will be pointed toward the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I).
“He came out of the race great,” Carroll said of Denis of Cork. “We will watch him the next few days, but he will probably run in the Belmont. Big Brown was very impressive.”
Although Big Brown was the overwhelming favorite to win on Derby Day, many experts were unsure as to whether the horse could overcome the 20th post position. However, the 5-2 favorite, covered the 1 1/4-mile dirt surface in 2 minutes, 1.45 seconds.
“I felt like Tom Cruise in Top Gun,” stated jockey Kent Desormeaux about Big Browns' Kentucky Derby win.
It’s been thirty years since a horse earned the Triple Crown of Racing. Big Brown looks to see if he can capture the middle jewel of the Triple Crown at the 133rd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday May 17th.
