When much of Belmont Park lost power on Sunday due to a transformer fire, the racing events were moved to Saratoga race track, which has reopened its gates today.
The 140-year-old track opened with a new look, including a new, air-conditioned luxury box, "At the Rail" and Paddock pavilions, as well as a “Restaurant Row” located near the path that the jockeys take to the silks room.
The historic Saratoga Race Course is perhaps one of the most well-known tourist destinations in New York state," U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand said. "I extend an invitation to all members of Congress and all Americans to visit and experience the thrill and spectacle of a day at the track."
The first week at Saratoga has a full schedule of races that include Saturday's Breeders' Cup Challenge Day where four graded stakes races automatically qualify for the Breeders' Cup Championships in October.
Opening races today included the early daily double, which paid $41.80 for the 8-2 combination. Star Player ($12.20) won the first race and Cognito ($4.60) won the second race over the wet track. The on-track handle was a whopping $123 million with an overall total of $583 million.
