Earlier this week, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed one time famed actress Bo Derek as the board’s newest member. When asked why he felt Derek, 51, would be an asset to the board, Governor Schwarzenegger stated that he felt it was important to include “different backgrounds and points of views” in his government.

This is definitely a first for the CHRB, as they have yet to have a member with a background that consists of public animal rights. Until her appointment, the board was made up of primarily race horse owners who are licensed by the very same board.

Those who have been critical of the board’s decisions in years past view this as a great opportunity to inject new life into the board. However, Derek stated that she felt that the board has made great strides as of late in regards to the major issues currently facing the sport, namely medication abuse.

Overall, this appointment was met with much appreciation, and Derek’s presence on the board is looked upon as a great move in the right direction.
