Australia's Melbourne Cup had the drama and intensity that horse racing enthusiasts crave. Viewed, who was 40/1, stayed just a nose ahead of Bauer (second from left) to become the 12th Melbourne Cup Winner. C'est La Guerre from New Zealand was third.
Favorite to win, Septimus finished 18th, Alessandro Volta 20th and Honolulu 21st, all European horses and Ballydoyle runners.
Over 100,000 spectators stood in the stands at Flemington to watch Viewed earn the $5.5 million photo finish win. This is the 12th victory for champion trainer Bart Cummings.
"I thought it was all over until the last 50 yards; then I wasn't sure," Cummings, 80, said.
Viewed was ridden by 21-year-old jockey Blake Shinn. Get all your online horse betting in the Bodog Racebook today.
