The WPT North American Poker Championships is down to its last six players and when they convene on the TV set for the filming of the final table there will be a few story lines worth keeping an eye on. And when we say a few, we mean we only recognize three of the names.
Coming in second in chips to the final table is poker pro Gavin Smith, who will be looking to add a second career WPT title to his resume. This deep run also comes in midst of a prop bet that Smith has with a fellow poker pro to remain sober for six months. Celebrating a victory worth more than $1 million could prove a temptation for falling off the wagon. However, winning while sober could also prove that…. something… it could mean…. hmmmm, we had it before. Oh well, cheers everyone. Drinks on us.
Sitting with the second-smallest chip stack is Kathy Liebert. This long time poker tournament veteran will be gunning for her first WPT title in her fifth WPT televised final table appearance. She will also be looking to become the first female to win an open WPT championship event, but will have some serious ground to make up to do so.
Reaching the final table of this event for the second year in a row is Canadian Marc Karam. Last year he was the first to exit the final table, but as he's not the short stack at this table, he'll be in good position to do a little better than that this year. Turns out Karam likes to do things like this back to back (that's what she said). He final tabled the EPT Grand Final in two consecutive years, 2006 and 2007, finishing fourth and second, respectively.
Final table play gets underway at 4pm ET and all eyes will be on the $1,090,589 first-place prize and the chance to become the next WPT-Made Millionaire.
