Five years ago Layne Flack won his fifth WSOP bracelet, putting him in the esteemed company of notable poker players like Phil Ivey, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Ted Forrest and the legendary Stu Ungar. Last night, Flack moved himself up a level, beyond that already notable achievement, to join Men "The Master" Nguyen and TJ Cloutier with a sixth bracelet, captured in Event No. 34 - $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha w/Rebuys - here at the 2008 WSOP.
Two days after rebuying 20 times for $30,000 during the first levels of play, that investment turned out to be a wise one. At the final table, Flack gained the chip lead early on and pressed his opponents into decision after decision, dominating a final table that included fellow, at the time, five-bracelet holder Ted Forrest and WSOP Europe barcelet winner Dario Alioto. Eventually he built his huge chip lead into a monster against heads-up opponent Daniel Makowsky, who fell in the face of Flack's aggression after just a few hands.
Flack won $577,725 for his first-place finish, Makowsky $355,050 for runner-up.
The win is vindication for a player who has sought affirmation in the "new world" of poker that has exploded since his last bracelet win and when asked about the six bracelets, all Flack could say was, with a grin spread across his face and six fingers in the air, "mine, all mine."
