Vanessa Selbst, fresh off becoming the first woman to win a WSOP Pot Limit Omaha event, was eliminated by Alec Torelli from the semifinal round of the WSOP Heads-Up Championship.
After one hour of heads-up play Torelli held with chip lead with 1,639,000 to Selbst’s 921,000.
The final hand came when Selbst was on the button with the blinds at 8,000/16,000. She raised to 40,000 and Torelli reraised to 130,000. Selbst called.
The flop came Js-4d-5c and Torelli bet out 150,000. Selbst thought for a while before calling. The turn brought 10d. After much thought he bet out 350,000. After a long time thinking Selbst finally pushed all-in and Torelli insta-called.
Selbst was horrified at the call but equally shocked to find out she was in the lead with her Ks-10s against Torelli’s open-ended straight draw with Kc-Qs. Her moment of hope was short-lived however as the river brought a devastating 9h to complete Torelli’s draw.
It must have been a familiar feeling since Selbst was also eliminated during the semifinals of the 2007 WSOP Heads-Up Championship. This year she made $108,288.
Torelli will go on to the final heads-up match against Kenny Tran for the WSOP bracelet after a best-two-out-of-three final starting at 7pm PT.
Interestingly, it’s been rumored that Kenny Tran has been claiming that he would win this whole event right from the start. Tran will get his chance to make his prophecy come to fruition tonight. Stay tuned to the Beat to see if it all pans out for him.
