The Foxwoods Resort Casino is one of the more out of the way stops on the tour, being in Connecticut and all. However, there are two $10,000 buy-in events on slate for Season 7 of the WPT, the World Poker Finals were back in November and the Foxwoods Poker Classic is now officially underway, and events there also seem to draw out a respectable crowd despite the location far from most gambling meccas.
The 2008 WPT Foxwoods Poker Classic drew 346 players and the World Poker Finals in November pulled in 412. Now, with only one Day 1 on the books, this years event has only just reached the 250 mark and there a very few stragglers expected to help boost the numbers. Economy? Timing? Location? Who knows.
The silver lining in all of that is that there is a much smaller field to contend with in order to reach the final table and hopefully the championship. The rest of the cloud is that there will be a much smaller prize as a reward for doing so.
Either way, among the players who did show up are a number of familiar faces, including Mike "The Mouth" Matusow, Gavin Smith, Kathy Liebert, Amnon Fillipi, Mark Seif, Bill Gazes, Bernard Lee, Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy and Carlos "The Matador" Mortensen.
Bodog poker pro David Williams also made the trip to Foxwoods to play and you can follow his tournament experience on Twitter, @dwpoker. We'll be keeping an eye on him as well and updating you on his progress here.
