The first stop for the 2009 World Poker Tour was in Biloxi, Mississippi last weekend where 283 players played for a first-place prize of $1 million. (Bodog Beat Images)

Casino organizers needed a magic number of 288 to reach the $1 million first-place prize, but fell short by six players. The Beau Rivage Resort & Casino cut into their own profits by adding an extra $24,219 to the prize pool, enough to increase the top prize to just over one million dollars.

Allen Carter was the eventual winner after a see-saw head-to-head battle with Bobby Suer. After crippling Suer early in the head-to-head competition, Carter doubled up Suer twice before he was able to put away the victory.

Final standings:

1st:  Allen Carter  -  $1,025,500
2nd:  Bobby Suer  -  $501,028
3rd:  Soheil Shamseddin  -  $263,725
4th:  Hilbert Shirey  -  $184,607
5th:  Tyler Smith  -  $134,500
6th:  Chuck Kim  -  $105,490
