2008 World Series Champs: American League or National League?

The American League is favored to produce the next World Series champion, but I have seen the light. The Los Angeles Dodgers are the best team in baseball at this very moment.

Let’s start with the junior circuit. The Boston Red Sox are defending World Series champions. They came in second in the AL East to the Tampa Bay Rays, but the Sox have a much stronger batting order (.805 OPS to Tampa’s .762). Tampa Bay has slightly better pitching and defense (3.82 ERA to Boston’s 4.01).

That’s looking at the whole regular season. Now let’s forget that and focus on September, after Manny Ramirez landed in L.A. The Dodgers posted a .815 OPS that month with a 3.16 ERA. That’s second in the big leagues on both counts. Neither of the AL teams came close, especially their pitching.
