Her loss to Elena Dementieva in Toronto represented her first tournament final since Sharapova returned to tour after missing nearly 10 months of singles action because of a right shoulder injury. She will be a fan favorite, returning to Flushing Meadows after missing the 2008 U.S. Open after having shoulder surgery in October.
