In their quest to stay ahead of the Manny Ramirez-led Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West race, the Arizona Diamondbacks have added a big bat of their own – Adam Dunn.
Dunn, who is tied for the NL lead in homeruns with 32, was acquired by the D-backs on Monday for minor league pitchers Dallas Buck and two other players to be named later. The Diamondbacks lead the Dodgers by 1½ games in the NL West standings.
Arizona had claimed Dunn off waivers and began furiously working with Cincinnati to get a deal done. Dunn, who is eligible for free agency after making $13 million this year, figures to boost an Arizona offense that has been an Achilles' heel at times for the club this year. The D-backs have been without the services of right fielder Justin Upton, who went on the disabled list July 9 with a strained oblique muscle. They also lost their starting left fielder in Eric Byrnes prior to that with a torn hamstring.
