While the men's side of the draw saw a few surprising upsets on Day One, it was all business as usual for the ladies in the opening round of the Australian Open.

Justin Henin, a winner in Melbourne in 2004, breezed past Japan's Aiko Nakamura 6-2, 6-2. American and defending champion Serena Williams also had an easy time of things, recording a straight-sets win (6-3, 6-3) over wildcard qualifier Jarmila Gajdosova. Russian starlet Maria Sharapova took care of Jelena Kostanic Tosic 6-4, 6-3 to advance to face veteran Lindsay Davenport in round 2.

The biggest nail-biter of the afternoon came courtesy of No. 3 seed Jelena Jankovic, who needed a lengthy third-set tiebreaker before finally advancing 2-6, 6-2, 12-10 over Austrian Tamira Paszek.
