Well, this certainly isn't good news. If you're a New York Mets fan, that is.

Word out of the Big Apple is that former Cy Young winner Pedro Martinez will miss between a month to a month-and-a-half with a left hamstring strain. The Mets have placed Martinez on the 15-day disabled list and allowed him to leave the team to seek further medical advice in New York. The Mets are currently in the midst of a season-opening series in Florida.

The injury occurred Tuesday, as Martinez was smacked around for four runs in 3 1/3 innings against the Marlins. The former Red Sox ace was noticably limping off the mound in the fourth.

It's a big downer for Mets fans, especially after prized acquisition Johan Santana looked magnificent in the season opener on Monday. It was widely expected for Santana to team with Martinez to give the Mets the 1-2 pitching combo they need to make the playoffs after last year's epic collapse. In Pedro's absence, New York will now rely on John Maine and Oliver Perez to eat up extra innings.

Currently, the New York Mets are listed at 11/2 to win the 2007-08 World Series.
