Dear lord, it's really going to happen. Brett Favre is taking the first steps to un-retire from the NFL.

According the Chris Mortensen of ESPN Favre and his agent have sent a letter to the Packers asking for his release on Friday.

Favre is currently on the Packers' retired list, but if he asks to be un-retired, the Packers must either reinstate him or waive him.

Obviously, Favre must have felt that the Packers didn't want him back if he has asked for his release.

Mortensen is also stating that Packers general manager Ted Thompson, Packers coach Mike McCarthy, Favre and Favre's agent James Cook had a conference call on Tuesday to discuss his return, but neither Thompson or McCarthy were enthusiastic about the idea.
