Less than a week into the NCAA basketball season and there’s already been an upset in the Top 25.
No. 22 Kentucky was stunned by unranked Gardner-Webb, 84-68, at Rupp Arena in a Coaches vs. Cancer Classic matchup on Wednesday night. It has been nearly six years since the Wildcats dropped a game during the regular season to a mid-major team.
Kentucky was favored by 26.5 against the point spread. The betting total flew over 137. The loss was the first for new Wildcats coach Billy Gillispie, who joined the program in April after leaving Texas A&M.
Last year, Gardner-Webb was 9-21 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Grayson Flittner had 22 points to lead the Bulldogs and Thomas Sanders added 21.
Ramel Bradley had 24 points for the Wildcats. Senior guard Joe Crawford was held to four points.
