It seems the West Virginia Mountaineers are not who we thought they were. They’ve dropped out of the rankings at 1-2 SU and 0-2 ATS after losing on the road to East Carolina (+7.5) and Colorado (+2.5). This is the first year for Bill Stewart as head coach after eight years under Rich Rodriguez, and it shows. His play-calling should improve as the season wears on; the Mountaineers get one more non-conference game against Marshall to iron out the bugs. Click here for the latest odds on this matchup.

The Thundering Herd (3-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) lost 48-23 at home to West Virginia last year, when the Mountaineers were 25.5-point favorites. Steve Slaton ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns that day; he’s now a member of the NFL’s Houston Texans. Marshall is coming off a 34-27 win at Southern Miss (-7) and should make some noise in Saturday’s rivalry game. I’m with the Herd.
