The Cardinal will try to establish the running game behind Toby Gerhart, who is 34th nationally in running with 93.91 yards per game. Stanford, which is 20th in the country in rushing, will also use Anthony Kimble at tailback to test Cal’s 3-4 defense that is solid against the run.
The Golden Bears, who are 9-point favorites, are looking for payback. Cal had won five in a row in the rivalry with Stanford, and had in fact dominated during that time, winning by an average of 30.4 points to 9.8. But the Cardinal turned the tables last season and won The Axe with a 20-13 victory that contributed to Cal’s late-season woes.
