College Football Tight Ends: Midseason Report Card

The best tight ends in college football are in the Big 12. Missouri’s Chase Coffman and Oklahoma State’s Brandon Pettigrew are the top two prospects at that position – Coffman as a receiver and Pettigrew primarily as a blocker. Pettigrew missed some time this year with an ankle injury and gets an incomplete grade, but Coffman gets an A+ and is the leading candidate to win the John Mackey Award.

Wisconsin’s Travis Beckum is the other premium tight end in the college ranks, but his season ended after he suffered a broken leg in Saturday’s win over Illinois. It’s just the latest in a series of injuries that have spoiled Beckum’s senior season – we will charitably give him an incomplete grade as well. Over at Boston College, Ryan Purvis isn’t catching a lot of footballs now that Matt Ryan is gone, and his blocking skills need work. C+ for Mr. Purvis.

Think you know who will be the top college football player at the end of the year? Bet on the Heisman winner in the Bodog Sportsbook.
