Ah, so that's why David Beckham's getting all that money.

The $27 million Brit showed off his skills on Wednesday night in leading the Los Angeles Galaxy to the finals of the SuperLiga competition. In his first start for his new Major League Soccer team, Beckham scored a goal in a 2-0 victory over D.C. United at The Home Depot Center in Carlsbad, Calif.

The momentous goal came 27 minutes into the contest and after the referee had stopped play because of handball call against United. Beckham lined up the free kick from 25 yards, and then put his gilded right foot onto the ball, bending it over the United wall and into the goal beyond goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

The Galaxy players swarmed him, and the crowd roared with approval.

Beckham wasn't finished. After intermission, he fed Landon Donovan with a sweet pass and the speedy striker scored on a low, hard shot to give the Galaxy an insurmountable lead. Sixteen minutes after the goal, Beckham left the game having tallied 63 minutes, a goal, an assist and a yellow card.

The Galaxy advanced to face Pachuca in the final of the SuperLiga, which is an inaugural tournament featuring squads from MLS and the Mexican league. The final will be played Wednesday, Aug. 29 at The Home Depot Center at 10 p.m. EST. The winning side receives $1 million.

Beckham also wore the captain's armband for the Galaxy, which had belonged to Donovan. The Galaxy hosts the New York Red Bulls in a regular-season MLS tilt on Saturday.

Los Angeles is a +350 underdog, a number that could move in Los Angeles's favor based on Beckham's performance. Get all your MLS and European Soccer Futures in the Bodog Sportsbook!
