It's been a while since we've written about David Duval without the words "downward" and "spiral" being prominently involved. But hey, guess it's time for that to change.

In one of the many improbable stories coming from Royal Birkhead this week – one being 53-year-old Greg Norman just one shot back of leader KJ Choi – the biggest has to be the fact that David Duval sits third heading into Saturday's play.

Duval, you'll recall, was driven completely off track in 2003 under dubious circumstances. His leave from the tour was linked to any of the following: back, wrist and shoulder problems; difficulties in his private life; vertigo and a lack of enthusiasm for the game. He once shot 25 over par at the US Open and has been just another tour grinder in recent years.
