With three hits on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, Derek Jeter matched the New York Yankees record of 2,721, a MLB milestone Lou Gehrig held for more than 70 years.

"It's just kind of mind-boggling to have my name next to his," Jeter said after the game.

At the time of the hit, however, the Yankees were losing to Tampa Bay. After getting his record tying hit, Jeter stood on first base and took in the roar as the crowd stood to congratulate him.

"What an ovation I got from the fans," he said. "I've been trying to do it for them."

Jeter added, "I really didn't know what to do because we were losing at the time and I didn't want to disrespect Tampa. I never dreamt about all of this."

The game turned around for the Yankees, however, when Jorge Posada hit a three run homer in the 8th to put the Yankees on the road to a 4-2 win.

Lou Gehrig's last hit was on April 29, 1939. Gehrig retired after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a disease which earned the nickname, Lou Gehrig's Disease.

His last day on the feild, Gehrig famously said, "Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans."
