Saturday, Dec. 8 in Las Vegas, WBC Welterweight Champion "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 24 KO's) retained his title by knocking out opponent Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton (43-1, 31 KO's) in the tenth round of their championship fight.
Hatton came out of the gates swinging in the first round and swarmed Mayweather with punches, landing a left to the face. Closing the distance again in the second and third, the British fighter kept Mayweather moving backwards. Suddenly, though, Mayweather unleashed a hard right that opened a cut over Hatton's eye. Evening the scorecards in the fourth round, Mayweather engaged in some brawling with his opponent and landed another right straight.
Keeping the pressure on in rounds 5 and 6, Hatton landed some body shots and an uppercut. The fight seemed to be going more towards Hatton's style in round 7, but Mayweather was able to hang in with him, and landed a hard right in the eighth round. Mayweather turned up the intensity in round 9, and began scoring some good shots.
Early in round 10, Mayweather caught his opponent with a perfect left hook that dropped Hatton face down into the ring post. Beating the count, Hatton was able to get up, but the champion went after him again hard, forcing the referee to stop the fight as Hatton fell down again at 1:35 in round 10.
"He's as tough as nails," Mayweather said of Hatton later. "I had him hurt a couple of times and he was still coming forward."
