Heartbreak was on the U.S. Olympic team menu today as gymnast Paul Hamm withdrew himself due to injury.

Hamm, who just nine days ago displayed a tremendous amount of heart and courage by competing with a recently-recovered broken hand, felt he wouldn't be physically capable of competing at the Olympics.

“I have put my heart and soul into my comeback and done everything I could to get ready in time to compete in Beijing,” said Hamm, in a statement sent by USA Gymnastics. “After returning home from the preparation camp, I had a few physical setbacks, and it became clear to me that my physical preparations would not be sufficient to properly represent the United States and contribute to the teams efforts to win a medal.”

Hamm won the all-around competition at the 2004 Olympics and was expected to be an integral component to America's 2008 gold medal hopes.

How will Hamm's absence affect USA's total medal count? Wager on America going over 92.5 medals now with all your 2008 Olympic Summer Games betting in the Bodog Sportsbook!
