Led by two goals from Lukas Podolski, the German national soccer club did exactly what they were expected to do against Poland on Sunday: win convincingly.

Touted by many as the favorite to win Group B, Germany struck at the 20-minute mark and then again in the second half en route to a 2-0 victory.

Though Poland fought admirably until the second Podolski goal with just under 15 minutes remaining, the Germans clearly prevailed and now sit atop their division after one day of play.

The win for Germany adds to an impressive undefeated streak they have against Poland, now at 16 games (12 wins and four draws).

Earlier in the day, co-host country Austria tried their luck against Croatia and came up short. Croatia, seen by some as a dark horse candidate to win the tournament, scored once in the first half and never looked back.

The lone goal for Croatia came from Luka Modric off of a penalty kick after four minutes.
