The No. 22 Georgetown Hoyas (28-6 SU, 14-17 ATS last year) open their 2008-09 college basketball season Monday night against the A-Sun’s Jacksonville Dolphins (18-13 SU, 0-1 ATS). The Hoyas have improved dramatically since John Thompson III took over in 2004. However, Georgetown’s preseason ranking illustrates the lowered expectations for Thompson’s program following the departure of Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace.
Why the pessimism? Thompson has his other three starters returning, plus a strong freshman class that includes twin towers Greg Monroe and Henry Sims in the frontcourt. The Hoyas did poorly against the spread after Hibbert plateaued as a senior. Removing him from the equation gives Georgetown a chance to do even better with the more mobile freshmen in the paint.
Georgetown faced the Dolphins last year at the Verizon Center and beat them 87-55 (no line). Get your latest college basketball odds report for Monday’s NCAAB slate.
