John Maine of the New York Mets (-119) has been one of the top pitchers in the NL this season. San Diego Padres (+109) right-hander Greg Maddux, on the other hand, is suffering through an uncharacteristic slump.
Maine goes for his fifth win in six starts while Maddux looks to avoid his longest losing streak in more than 17 years when the Mets visit the Padres for the finale of a three-game series at Petco Park on Wednesday. Maine (10-5, 2.91 ERA) ranks in the NL's top five in wins, ERA and opponent batting average (.217). He is also second in the league with a 2.25 ERA on the road, where he is 7-1 in nine starts.
However, he had a four-start winning streak snapped in his last outing, allowing seven runs — four earned — in 4 2-3 innings as the Mets (52-41) lost 8-4 at home to Cincinnati on Friday.
