If you were told about a year ago that your 2008 lineup would consist of fantasy players Vladimir Guerrero, Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Alex Rios, Curtis Granderson and Victor Martinez, what would your reaction have been?
Back flips maybe?
Well, fast forward to the present, and if you have that lineup, you're probably in last place kicking yourself for not dropping Guerrero for Pittsburgh's Nate McLouth.
Fantasy baseball always has its first-half surprises, but the way some of the stars and role players have looked in the first half, you'd think we were in Bizarro World.
So what the hell is going on? We give you the 411 on some of baseball's slumping stars and see if they can still help you in 2008.
Vladimir Guerrero, OF, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
What's Wrong: It's common knowledge that Guerrero swings at everything that smells the strike zone. But unlike years past, he's been hitting nothing but air in 2008. With a horrible slump and a bad knee, he's on pace to bat under .300 for the first time since his rookie season and could approach a whopping 105 strikeouts.
Outlook: Hitting coach Mickey Hatcher thinks that Guerrero is breaking out of his two-month slump. "This guy has been swinging the bat a lot better lately," Hatcher said. "I really believe that his stats are going to be there. He might not be hitting .300 now, but I think he'll still have great stats for this team when we come down the stretch."
I'm not as optimistic. Twenty home runs and 85 RBIs seem about right, and that's light-years behind his three-year average of 31 HRs and 116 RBIs.
