The National League hasn’t enjoyed a lot of success in the World Series since the designated hitter came along, but there’s been no shortage of epic heroes over the years from the senior circuit.

  • 1905: Christy Mathewson wins three games, all shutouts, as New York Giants beat Philadelphia Athletics in five.
  • 1931: Pepper Martin goes 12-for-24 as St. Louis bounces Connie Mack’s Athletics.
  • 1957: Eddie Matthews hits game-winning home run in Game 4; Braves go on to defeat Yankees.
  • 1960: Bill Mazeroski hits series-ending home run in Game 7 as Pirates upset Yankees.
  • 1969: Ron Swoboda makes diving catch to help Miracle Mets win Game 4 against Baltimore.
  • 1988: Kirk Gibson hobbles around bases after walk-off, pinch-hit home run off Oakland’s Dennis Eckersley wins Game 1.
  • 2001: Luis Gonzalez becomes Mr. November with winning hit in Game 7 off Yankees star reliever Mariano Rivera.
