Some seamheads believe that “clutch” doesn’t exist, but when it comes to pitching in the high-pressure MLB playoffs, tiny mistakes make the difference between winning and losing. Handicappers will be paying close attention to these five pitchers to sink or swim this October:

Josh Beckett, Boston Red Sox: Pushed to Game 3 of the ALDS against the Angels due to a strained oblique muscle.

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs: Pitched one inning in relief for the Cubs in last year’s NLDS, his playoff debut.

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers: The future ace of the staff has started just four games this year because of a knee injury.

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays: “Big Game” James will pitch Game 1 for the Rays in their first trip to the postseason.

Carlos Zambrano, Chicago Cubs: Gave up 13 runs in his last two starts after throwing a no-hitter against Houston.
